Welcome to my website.
My Name is Rob Spencer. I am a
student at Central
Michigan University. I am working toward my teaching certification
in special education and earth science.
I love learning both fields. I
have a great desire to help people with disabilities. Part of that may be because I have a visual
impairment, and I know personally how tough it can be to keep up with others
when you have something hindering you.
Here is a little more about me and my life so far:
I grew up in Port
Huron, Michigan. I am the youngest of five kids. In high school, I was involved in various
activities. I wrote for the “Light
House” the school newspaper. I also was
in the TV production class, which involved working with a local TV station
recording school sporting events. I was
also on the high school radio station, but not without a fight. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to handle
the job, because meter reading need to be taken and the microphone and mixer
were on opposite sides of the room from the meters. After a few months of being on the air, the
program director and music director of the community college station called to
ask if I would like to be on that station.
So, I left the high school station and worked on the college station.
A new chapter opened up in my life when I moved to Mount Pleasant, Michigan. I met many new people, learned so many new
things, and have had a wealth of experiences.
I became involved with the Wesley Foundation (a United Methodist campus
ministry), where I served as a peer minister.
I am very grateful for having been involved in the Wesley Foundation,
because many of the people I met, things I learned, and experiences I
had were directly related to that organization.
Before Hurricane Katrina, a group of us from the Wesley Foundation went
down to New Orleans
and did some volunteer work. After the
hurricane, we went down again to help clean up the mess left in its wake.
Central
Michigan University
has taught me so much. I’ve taken my
time and taken classes that I enjoy, even if it wasn’t part of my degree
requirements. I think it is sad that so
many people see college as merely a stepping stone to a better job. While I acknowledge this, I see it as much
more than that. I see it as a time to
grow as a person. I believe it is a time
to learn, and follow desires to learn about any topic you are interested in.
I hope this has given you a better understanding of who I
am. I invite you to click on the links
in the menu to the left for further exploration.
